Stop PATH Powerline

Save Historic and Scenic Cacapon River Country in Hampshire

“No New Path For PATH”

American Electric Power and Allegheny Energy want to put a huge power line through Hampshire and Morgan County. (For details go to www.pathtransmission.com). We, the Friends of the Cacapon River, are particularly concerned about those routes that will impact The Cacapon River, the surrounding countryside and how it will affect many historic sites. The Cacapon River is George Washington's "Other River." He knew it because, as a youth, he surveyed much of it.  Consequently, we are recommending that if there must be a power line that the new line follow the old corridors. WHY IT IS BAD

It is the second huge power line to be forced on Hampshire County. The other is TrAIL.

(For information on TrAIL go to: www.caponvalleycoalition.com.)

Loss of use of private and historic property.

Permanent aesthetic compromise of an extended swath of pristine forest and loss of scenic values forever.

Loss of wildlife habitat, managed timberland, conservation farms and hunting properties.

Damage to the Cacapon River because of herbicide pollution and siltation of waterways.

Increased Coal production, air pollution, emissions of greenhouse gases.

Increased electric costs to citizens of West Virginia.

These historic treasures would be compromised:

Caudy's Castle -  this is a rockpinnacle of Oriskany sandstone that stands 1,070 feet (326 meters) over the Cacapon River

White Rock - A natural land formation/cliff used as a guidepost on the Cacapon River

Bloomery Iron Furnace  The furnace was built in 1833 and tons of iron was carried on boats down the Cacapon River.
